The Nobel prize is a prestigious award given to individuals who have made significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, economics, and the promotion of peace.
History
Alfred Nobel has used his estate to fund annual awards “granted to those who have brought the greatest benefit to humanity in the past year.” He said the Nobel Prize in Physics “should be awarded to the person who is said to have made the most important ‘discovery’ or ‘invention’ in the field of physics”. Nobel does not emphasize discovery, but historically, the Nobel Prize committee has prioritized discovery over invention: 77% of physics prizes are awarded for discovery, compared to 23% for invention. In their article in Nature and Technoetic Arts, Christoph Bartneck and Matthias Rauterberg argue that this emphasis on discovery has diverted the Nobel Prize from its original purpose of rewarding the greatest contribution to society.
