Avatar is a 2009 American epic science fiction film directed, written, produced, and co-edited by James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver. The film is set in the mid-22nd century when humans are colonizing Pandora, a lush habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system, to mine the mineral unobtanium, a priceless substance that has tremendous industrial and military value. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na’vi – a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora. The film’s title refers to a genetically engineered Na’vi body with the mind of a remotely located human that is used for interacting with the natives of Pandora.
Avatar was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three, for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects. It became the first film to gross more than $2 billion and the best-selling film of 2010 in the United States. Avatar remains the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide when adjusted for inflation.
Cameron said that he wrote the script for Avatar in 1994, but its development was delayed because of the technical limitations of special effects at the time. Work on the film began in 2005 when Cameron began developing new computer-generated technology that would be necessary for the development of the film.
Avatar – The Way of Water
Cameron stated in 2006 that he would like to make sequels to Avatar if it was successful, and announced the first two sequels in 2010, following the widespread success of the first film, with The Way of Water aiming for a 2014 release. However, the addition of three more sequels, for a total of five Avatar films, and the necessity to develop new technology in order to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, preproduction, and visual effects. Preliminary shooting started in Manhattan Beach, California, on August 15, 2017, followed by principal photography simultaneously with Avatar 3 in Wellington on September 25, 2017. Filming concluded in late September 2020 after three years of shooting. With an estimated budget of $350–400 million, it is one of the most expensive films of all time.
Following repeated delays in the expected release schedule, Avatar: The Way of Water premiered in London on December 6, 2022, and was theatrically released in the United States on December 16, 2022. The film received generally positive reviews from critics. Organizations such as the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute named Avatar: The Way of Water as one of the top ten films of 2022, and it received nominations for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director at the 80th Golden Globe Awards. Three more sequels are scheduled for 2024, 2026 and 2028, though this depends on the success of The Way of Water.
